The short answer
There is no secret trick to appear in AI answers. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimization is needed. What helps is the same work that helps local search: a complete Google Business Profile, clear service pages, recent reviews and facts that match everywhere your business appears.
How AI answers find contractors
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a method called query fan-out. The system runs several related searches and picks supporting pages from the results. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search to be used as a supporting link.
Google also says AI Overviews only appear when they add value beyond a normal search result, so they often do not show at all. Other AI assistants that search the web also pull from public pages, business listings and reviews. Their rules differ and change often, so we focus on the work that stays useful either way.
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of writing pages so answer systems can quote them clearly. For a contractor, that mostly means plain, direct answers on real pages.
What you control
- Your Google Business Profile. Keep it complete and accurate. Our Google Business Profile guide shows how.
- Consistent business details. Use the same name, address and phone number on your website, profile and listings.
- Reviews. Ask every happy customer, reply to each review, and encourage details about the job and the town.
- Service pages. Give each service its own page with the work you do, the areas you serve, what affects price and your license and insurance facts.
- Direct answers. Start each answer with the answer, then add detail. Short, clear answers are easier to quote.
- A crawlable site. Make sure Google can reach and index your pages, and keep your internal links clear.
- Matching structured data. Google says you need no special schema for AI features. If you use structured data, keep it consistent with the text people can see.
- Real local mentions. Listings from your chamber of commerce, suppliers or trade groups help show that your business is real.
What you cannot control
You cannot make an AI answer appear, choose which companies it names or control how it words the answer. Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed. Be careful with anyone who promises a guaranteed spot in an AI answer.
A 30-day plan
- Week 1. Check your Google profile and your name, address and phone number across your website and listings. Fix any mismatch.
- Week 2. Improve your three most important service pages. Add a direct answer at the top, a short list of what affects price, and your service areas.
- Week 3. Start a review routine. Ask after every finished job and reply to every review.
- Week 4. Test the questions customers ask and write down what you see.
Test it yourself each month
Ask five real questions, such as who is a good roofer in your town and how much a service costs there. Try Google and one AI assistant. Write down whether your business is named and which sources the answer uses. Treat this as a sample, not a ranking, because answers can change from one day to the next.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI search replace Google for contractors?
We cannot verify that. The usage numbers we found come from companies selling AI services, so we do not quote them. The work overlaps with normal local SEO, so you do not need a separate budget to start.
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there is no special structured data you need to add. Keep any structured data you use consistent with your visible page text.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No one can guarantee that. Focus on the parts you control, and be careful with promises of guaranteed AI placement.
What is AEO?
AEO means answer engine optimization. It is the practice of writing clear, direct answers on real pages so search and AI systems can quote them.
